Byron Wallen Quartet

Raised in a musical environment, Byron studied classical piano from an early age. He also studied trumpet with Jimmy Owens, Donald Byrd and Jon Faddis in New York. He studied and graduated with a degree in Psychology, Philosophy and Maths from Sussex University. During this period, he recorded for Loose Ends and Cleveland Watkiss and played trumpet in a variety of musical settings; with Mervyn Africa, The Style Council, Charles Earland, Courtney Pine and Jean Toussaint. One of the most dynamic and versatile jazz voices currently on the British scene, Byron has performed with rap outfits such as The Roots, Digable Planets and Us3. His trumpet has appeared alongside African pioneers such as Hugh Masekela, Manu Dibango and Ammonpondo. He has also worked with Lonnie Liston Smith, Ronnie Laws and Chaka Khan. A powerful composer, Byron Wallen's intuitive and spiritual leaning shine through his "Tarot Suite," an enticing piece of music that draws inspiration from the symbols and imagery of the tarot cards. It's world premiere received rave reviews from the British press with Byron being heralded as 'The most interesting new explorer of Miles Davis' legacy" (The Guardian). The twenty-two-piece suite is written for ten musicians. The band toured England where their unique blend of sound and performance enthralled audiences.

The band that was the first to feature Byron's positive and musically diverse vision was Sound Advice. The eclectic sound of the band led to invitations to the Anglo-Arabic festival '96 in Syria, and to the Czech Republic in '97 where they were a major success. The band completed a tour of England and Scotland promoting their two albums. Sound Advice also performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, where they played to an enthusiastic full house. The first album features Airto Moreira and an all star cast. Released on B&W Records the album proved to be a stunning debut. Byron's second album is 'Earth Roots" recorded for M.E.L.T.2000. Both albums and the subsequent tours have received rave reviews from the music critics. "Sound Advice" has recently returned from a sell out tour of the Czech Republic.

Byron has recently finished his third album featuring his band Indigo. He also has finished the multilayered album Penguin. These albums will both appear on his twilight jaguar label which is set to be launched in 2001. He is currently recording the long awaited "Sacred Circles" featuring Cleveland Watkiss and a wide range of traditional instruments, conch shells, technology and voices to create a spiral labyrinth of sound. “Gayan” is yet another of Byron’s projects which fuses traditions. This one focuses on Indonesia and East Africa and fuses it with the urban sounds of modern dance music and contemporary classical traditions. Byron has travelled to these pillars of inspiration working and studying with traditional musicians, and creating innovative new soundscapes and compositions. Some of the fruits of this research can be heard on the releases Chantik which is a recording of traditional music from the heart of Java featuring Mr Pa Jamadi on Celempung and the celestial voice of his wife recorded on location. Also available is the album Nakibembe which captures the Ugandan Embaire group in full flight. This must be East Africa's top xylophone group. You can also view extracts of Byron's documentary film Travelling which chronicles his three-month stay in Uganda with all it's trials and tribulations full of amazing music and dance footage. Byron's love of traditional music's of the world has already taken him to Morocco where he performed and recorded with master Gnawa musician Si Muhammed culminating in the brilliant "Automatic Original" release.

Last year saw Byron writing a commisioned piece with choreographer Sheron Wray called LIVE which was performed at the Clore theatre in the Royal Opera House. The show was a sell out and received outstanding reviews. This was also the year when the band Indigo came to life, they toured England honing their compelling unique sound. Byron also recorded on Jean Toussaint's latest album “Street above the underground”, and toured with the Nazaire group. Byron also collaborated with the Arabian tabla master Rony Barak and Alaadin in Kano Nigeria for a special project launching the new British Council building.

Byron's future work involves working on a commissioned work 'Storm" tracing the journey of African slaves through the middle passage into the African Diaspora (e.g. Americas, Caribbean and Europe). There is also an album of Byron's group AS IS which features a suite of music inspired by the Mayan prophetic books of Chilam Balan. The album Fateful Encounters is a collection of songs inspired by some of those human beings who have the power and magnetism to change peoples lives.
